A caregiver is someone who helps to care for children, a disabled person, or the elderly in their home. The caregiver may be a member of the family or someone the family hired. Caregivers have a variety of duties based on the needs of the individual. The caregivers helping a family may become almost like a member of the family.

Caregivers may be hired by an individual or by a caregiver agency. Jobs for caregivers might be found by contacting a caregiver agency or by searching newspapers and the Internet for job listings. The local unemployment office may have information about available caregiver jobs.
Some people move to a different country to work as caregivers. Working as a caregiver in a foreign country allows the caregivers to attend school there. The caregivers may want to apply for permanent citizenship in the country where they are working. Some countries allow caregivers to obtain citizenship after they fulfill work requirements.
Nurses and caregivers are not the same. A nurse may administer medication and medically treat the individual in their care. If the individual has health problems that require medical equipment such as feeding tubes or ventilators, a nurse is likely to be required for such a home health care job.
The jobs for caregivers usually do not include medical care like administering medications. The caregiver’s job is usually to assist the individual with self care tasks like bathing and toileting. The caregivers may also be required to do some housework and cooking.
Companionship is often part of a caregiver’s job. The caregivers might play games, watch television, talk, and take walks with the people they are caring for. If an elderly client is capable of their own self care and still does many housework chores, companionship may be the most common duty for their caregivers. Many families feel better knowing that someone is with the elderly relative just in case they would have an accident or need help.
Caregivers may accompany the person they are caring for to activities in the community. Some caregivers drive their clients to appointments or to do errands. Shopping for food and household supplies may be the caregiver’s responsibility.
To become caregivers, some people go through training programs. An agency that places caregivers with families may require their applicants to have completed a training program or have work experience related to being caregivers.
Many people take pride in being caregivers. The caregivers provide a valuable service to families who need their help. Hiring caregivers is often a cost-effective way to care for family members in the home. It may be cheaper than day care for children or nurses for elderly family members who need help but do not require constant medical monitoring.
Caregivers may also make it possible for an elderly person to remain in their own home rather than being forced to live in a nursing home due to difficulty caring for themselves. Many caregivers develop friendships with their clients and the family that is almost as if the caregivers are part of the families for whom they work.
